The History Behind the Name Bembridge

The name “Bembridge” on the Isle of Wight originates from the Old English words binnan and brycg, which mean ‘the place within the bridge’. Historically, when Brading Harbour extended to Brading, Bembridge could only be reached either by boat or by crossing the bridge at Yarbridge, built around 1300. Before the construction of this bridge, the village was known as Orham.
