Brook Beach

Hanover Point and Brook Chine are two locations on the south coast of the Isle of Wight that are worth exploring – specifically at low tide. Hanover Point is home to a set of well-preserved dinosaur footprints that can be seen at low tide. These footprints provide a fascinating glimpse into the island’s prehistoric past and are a must-see for anyone interested in fossils and dinosaurs. Nearby, Brook Chine is home to a fascinating geological feature known as the fossilised pine raft. This rare feature is a fossilised tree trunks that has been encased in sandstone and preserved for millions of years.

Visitors to Brook Chine can also hunt for fossils in the nearby rock pools, which are home to a variety of interesting specimens. These two locations provide a unique opportunity to explore the island’s natural history and are sure to be a highlight of any visit to the Isle of Wight’s south coast.

Clearly marked on Google Maps, both beaches offer a peaceful and tranquil, yet exhilarating atmosphere. With wide expanses of sand, rock pools, and interesting geological features, they are a treasure trove waiting to be explored.

Compton Beach

Compton Beach is a stunning stretch of golden sand, backed by dramatic cliffs and rolling hills. It’s the perfect spot for water sports enthusiasts, with excellent conditions for surfing, paddleboarding, and kiteboarding.  The walk down to the beach is via a steep set of steps, so don’t bring anything too heavy to carry!

The sea swimming is very safe, with interesting underwater features that create a natural reef, causing a gentle swell to roll into the beach – perfect for body boarding.

The beach does get very narrow at high tide and can get very busy at peak season, as does the car park. If you want true isolation visit out of season when it will feel like you have the entire beach to yourself.

There is public conveniences in the National Trust car park.

Chilton Chine

Chilton Chine is a small and secluded beach that offers a peaceful and tranquil setting, with a winding and very steep footpath leading visitors to its hidden beauty. The footpath down isn’t suitable for young children – it is badly damaged at the sea end.

Its unique geological features, include a small waterfall that cascades over the cliffs, and a quickly eroding cliff-stack – make it a must-see destination.  The waterfall is nestled in the Chine alongside the steps down to the beach and head towards Brook Beach to see the cliff-stack.

At low tide the area is a fascinating, peaceful and spectacular beach.  Take your camera and if you are travelling with children pack wellies or beach shoes and take a picnic mat, the children can explore safely for hours.

If your looking for refreshments after your exhilarating beach explore head the the Isle of Wight Pearl centre, their cafe is free to enter and provides wonderful views of the coast.
