Discover the hidden treasures of the isle of Wight and experience unforgettable moments as you explore like a local!

When it comes to exploring the Isle of Wight, there’s more than meets the eye in tourist guides. This beautiful island has a treasure trove of hidden gems that locals love and tourists often miss, giving you a unique experience unshared by many.

These are a few of our favourites, there are so many to mention!

First, let’s discover the island’s secret beaches, where the locals adore spending their time. Steephill Cove, Binnel Bay or Watcombe Bay for the more adventurous (There used to be a tunnel through the cliff down to the beach at Watcombe Bay, but this has been closed for a long time, many locals still remember accessing this. The only way of getting to the beach is at low tide from Freshwater Bay – but we advise caution and a good understanding of tides to avoid being cut off on your return), and Whale Chine on the southern coast are serene escapes perfect for a relaxing day by the water. These tucked-away spots offer stunning views and peaceful surroundings, making them ideal places to unwind. Do always check tides to remain safe.

Next, treat your taste buds to local flavours by visiting charming, off-the-beaten-path eateries. Head to The Garlic Farm where you will find an amazing array cakes and afternoon tea plus many gluten free options.

Enjoy a meal or drink at The Pointer Inn (Newchurch) where you can take a beautiful after meal stroll through the lovely village, or Harvey Browns near Sandown for a taste of the island’s unique cuisine if you are self-catering or to pick up some local food. You can also sit outside and enjoy the views over the lake.  These quirky establishments offer a selection of goods you won’t find elsewhere, with fresh ingredients and creative twists. (We often buy much of our fresh produce from Harvey Browns as they source high quality and very competitively priced).

For outdoor enthusiasts, immerse yourself in the island’s beauty by exploring scenic hiking and cycling routes. Favourite spots among locals include Tennyson Trail, Ventnor to Bonchurch with its stunning scenery and history, and The Sunshine Trail. These adventures allow you to take in breath taking views and get active at the same time.

Culture lovers will delight in the hidden gems that showcase the Isle of Wight’s rich history, art, and literature. Must-sees include The Arreton Barns for arts and crafts (Don’t forget to check out the old fashioned penny machines and get your fortune read!), Quarr Abbey for a beautifully picturesque monastery, wonderful walks and a great place to have a picnic (It’s free entry) and Farringford – a haven for literature fans once home to famous poet Alfred Tennyson.

Finally, don’t miss the opportunity to interact with the island’s diverse wildlife. Visit the Isle of Wight Reptilarium, Fort Victoria, near Yarmouth, the business is small and in need of tourism support due to ever increasing electricity bills, on a rainy or breezy day it really is worth seeing the wonderful variety of reptiles on show – our favourite is the turtle pool.

If you are over Sandown way, Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve, sitting within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) it may provide you with the best chance of seeing a Red Squirrel!.

Fancy animal interaction? Check out Wight Alpacas (Western side of Island) to get up close and personal with unique and captivating creatures. It’s an experience that will leave you feeling connected to the island’s natural wonders.

Embrace the adventure and explore the Isle of Wight like a local with these hidden gems, as your journey is bound to be filled with unrivalled experiences and unforgettable memories.
