Cowes Harbour extends into the Solent then up the river Medina (which is a lot less explored than the town itself and well worth a look) The area around the harbour is a great place to take a stroll, enjoy the views, and watch the boats go by.
There are also several pubs and bars along the harbourfront, which provide a perfect spot for a drink or a meal with a view. Cowes High Street is the main shopping area, offering a mix of traditional and contemporary stores and places to eat.
Cowes has a rich history, and there are several historic sites and landmarks in and around the town that you can explore, such as Cowes Castle, Osborne House, and Northwood House and Park.

Getting to Cowes.
Red Funnel operates a car and passenger ferry service between Southampton and East Cowes, which is just a short distance away from Cowes town centre. The journey time is approximately 55 minutes, or around 20 minutes on the Red Jet which arrives in West Cowes and there are frequent sailings throughout the day. Foot passengers and dogs can also travel on the ferry. There is plenty of amemtities at the ferry terminal and plenty of information about the local area on hand, plus WiFi and toilets/baby changing.
Cowes on Foot.
It is possible to spend a day trip in Cowes on foot. The town centre is relatively compact and most of the attractions, shops, and restaurants are within walking distance of each other. You can easily explore the town on foot and take in the sights and sounds of this charming seaside town.
The harbour area is a great place to start your walking tour, where you can admire the boats and yachts and take a stroll along the seafront. From there, you can head to Cowes High Street, which is the main shopping and dining area, and explore the various independent shops and cafes.

Visit Cowes Harbour (PO31 7AS):
Take a stroll around the harbour and watch the boats and yachts come in and out. You can also visit the Cowes Maritime Museum which is located near the harbour.
Visit Cowes Maritime Museum (PO31 7SG):
Cowes Maritime Museum offers an insight into the maritime history of the town and the island. It houses various exhibits, artifacts, and interactive displays related to Cowes’ shipbuilding, sailing, and yachting heritage. The museum is located near Cowes Harbour and is easily accessible from the town centre.
Explore Cowes High Street:
This street has many independent shops, cafes, and restaurants that offer a variety of food and drink options. You can also find some unique souvenirs to take home.
See Cowes Castle (PO31 7QH):
Cowes Castle is a historic fortification located near the harbour. It was built in 1539 and is now used by the Royal Yacht Squadron. It is a great spot to sit and have a coffee or Ice cream, you are not able to visit the interior but outside is worth seeing.
Go on Cowes Chain Ferry (PO32 6RF):
The Cowes Chain Ferry is a unique way to cross the River Medina between East Cowes and West Cowes. It is the only remaining chain ferry in the UK, and it operates by using a chain to pull the ferry across the river Medina. The ferry has been in operation since 1859, and it offers a quick and easy way to get from one side of Cowes to the other. The best part is that it is free for foot passengers, and you get to experience a piece of local history at the same time.
Visit Osborne House:
Osborne House was once the holiday home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. You can visit and walk around the rooms to learn about the history of the royal family. (You can get the bus or it is a 30 minute walk up a relatively steep hill.) To get to Osborne House from the Red Jet Ferry Terminal in Cowes by bus, you can take the Southern Vectis bus route 5 or 9.
Route 5 runs from Newport to East Cowes via Cowes, and Route 9 runs from Newport to Ryde via Cowes. Both routes stop at the Osborne House bus stop, which is located just outside the entrance to the house.
The journey time from Cowes to Osborne House by bus is approximately 15-20 minutes, depending on the route and the traffic conditions. Buses run regularly throughout the day, but it’s always a good idea to check the timetable in advance to ensure you catch the most convenient service.
Take a stroll along the beach: Cowes has several beaches that are great for a relaxing walk or a swim. Gurnard Beach (PO31 8LD), Egypt Point Beach, and Cowes Beach are all popular options. All are within a short distance of Cowes and accessed by walking from the Town directly along the Esplanade, just keep walking Westward, the walk is flat with plenty of public conveniences and places to get refreshments.
Go on a boat tour:
You can take a boat tour of the Solent from Cowes and explore the surrounding area. There are several tour operators that offer this service, please book ahead to enquire about departure location. Rebel Marine offer a good choice of tours.
See St. Mildred’s Church (PO31 7ER):
St. Mildred’s Church is a beautiful 13th-century church located in the heart of Cowes town centre. It is a hidden gem that is often overlooked by tourists, but it is well worth a visit. The church is steeped in history and features some impressive architecture, including a Norman doorway and a 14th-century tower. Inside, you can admire the stained-glass windows and intricate wood carvings. The church is open to visitors throughout the day, and there is no admission fee, although donations are always appreciated.
Visit the Northwood House and Park (PO31 8AZ):
This Victorian mansion is surrounded by beautiful parkland that is open to the public. You can take a leisurely stroll or enjoy a picnic in the park. It is a great spot to rest your legs.
Attend a regatta:
Cowes is famous for its annual sailing regattas which take place in August. You can watch the races and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the town during this time. Check online, ferry crossings get particularly booked up during the famous Cowes week.
