We’ve rounded up 5 of our favourite gentle walks on The Isle of Wight that offer breathtaking views and a sense of exploration without breaking a sweat!
Yarmouth to Freshwater Village:
There are various ways to reach Freshwater Village from Yarmouth. For this walk we have gone along the old railway line, this is flat and accessible and suitable for bikes and pushchairs. The route is around 3 miles long and takes in some stunning views of the Yar river and Afton Down. If you are driving park at Yarmouth Harbour (PO41 0NT) and head towards Mill Road. You can carry on into Freshwater Bay if you wish to continue this walk, the return buses to yarmouth operate on a regular basis.
Bembridge Trail:
This is a circular walk starting and finishing in the village of Bembridge (The actual full trail runs for over 11 miles into Newport). This route is just over 2 miles long and takes in some beautiful countryside and coastal scenery!. Start at Bembridge Point where there is parking and you will get great views of the harbour, follow the path marked Bembridge trail towards the Bembridge Windmill, this will take you along the pretty high street. Once you reach the Windmill you can continue along from here but the gradient does get slightly steeper at points through the downs) and may not be suitable for a pushchair or wheelchair users. Turn down Mill Lane heading south, turn left and head down towards Lane End Road, a pretty road, with a few shops and amenities. Keep going until you hit the beach (You can turn right and explore the Foreland down any of the roads). You will reach the stunning RNLI launch and a walk along the beach back to Bembridge Point will make you feel you are in another country with the fascinating Bembridge Ledge and old trees on the beach.
Sandown to Shanklin:
Always a favourite of ours anytime of the year. This is a lovely coastal walk that takes in the popular seaside towns of Sandown and Shanklin. The route is around 3 miles long and is relatively flat. You will have the steep cliffs of Sandown and Lake on one side and then the beautiful sandy beaches of Sandown and Shanklin on the other. It is very accessible and suitable for pushchairs and wheel chair users. Park at Culver Parade Car Park (PO36 8AT) and follow the coastal path.
Ventnor to Steephill Cove:
This is a gentle walk along the coast from Ventnor to the charming Steephill Cove, it can get quite steep in places on the path depending if you choose to leave the route (up into Ventnor). The route is around 1.5 miles long and takes in some beautiful sea views. You can Park at Ventnor Botanic Garden Car Park (PO38 1UL) or we find parking in La Falaise nice and simple which is just slightly further down the coast. Follow the coastal path which winds down beautifully along the coast, on a sunny day you may even be lucky enough to see a lizard basking in the sun.
Newtown Creek Nature Reserve:
This is a gentle walk through the beautiful Newtown Creek Nature Reserve, and is well worth a visit and adding to your walk list for the Island. The route is around 3 miles long and takes in some stunning countryside scenery, however you can cut the route much shorter depending on your need. Park at the National Trust Newtown Old Town Hall Car Park (PO30 4PA), this is pay and display. Take a moment to visit the hut in the car park that houses fascinating information about the wildlife and flora in the area – children will love this! You can then turn left across the road into the circular walk that takes you through ancient woodland then along to the creek, or you can turn immediately left at the National Trust car park and head towards the jetty area in the creek, which is stunning on a sunny day, you will see fish swimming and fishermen fishing from the man made pier.
