If you’re looking for a relaxing and enjoyable day trip to the Isle of Wight, arriving as a foot passenger in Yarmouth is a great way to start.

Visit Yarmouth Harbour on the isle of Wight By Boat

Yarmouth is a charming town on the western side of the island and offers a great starting point for exploring the rest of the island.  The town may be small but you will be amazed at what you can find within walking distance, explore the beautiful River Yar by foot, walk along the former railway line or head back in time and visit the old sea defences along the coastal paths.

With so much to do, here’s how to make the most out of a day trip to the Isle of Wight as a foot passenger arriving in Yarmouth.  We have provided information that will include using the local buses, a day rover pass may be the best way for you to get cost effective travel for the day, allowing you to jump on and off the buses.  Just check at the bus station – these tickets may not be available for the Breezer open top buses.

The buses are very easy to use, they run up to Alum bay where the service stops, then returns to Yarmouth. You can also access the FYT local buses which you will see information on at the bus stops, this is a locally provided, charity supported mini-bus service.

9:00 am – Arrive in Yarmouth

If you’re taking the ferry from Lymington, it’s a short 40-minute journey to Yarmouth. Once you arrive, you can head straight into town and explore the charming streets, cafes, and shops.  The small lanes with interesting shops will keep you busy for an hour, you will find delicious shops selling local produce, plenty of ice cream and unique outlets to rummage until your hearts content.  Our favourites are the Crystal and gem shop, and the Delicatessen on the main square service lovely fresh bread.

10:00 am – Visit Yarmouth Castle

Yarmouth Castle is a must-see attraction in the town, and it’s only a short walk from the ferry terminal. Built by Henry VIII, the castle offers stunning views over the Solent and features exhibits and displays on the history of the castle and the island.  You can see the castle easily when you arrive on the ferry, but the entrance is squeezed down a narrow pathway next to Salty’s bar.

11:00 am – Take a coastal walk

After visiting Yarmouth Castle, grab a fresh coffee and take a stroll along the coastal path towards Freshwater Bay. Head first along the coastal path to Fort Victoria. The walk offers beautiful views of the coastline, and you can stop at various beaches and coves along the way. Head in the direction of Fort Victoria then work your way inland, along the path towards Freshwater village.  The walk will take around 2 hours, or you can jump on a open top bus leaving from Yarmouth bus station, with plenty of travel information available in the small travel bureau you will be able to plan your journey with ease.

As you make your way towards Freshwater Bay, stop for lunch at one of the many cafes and restaurants in Freshwater village. The Bay and village are around a mile apart. Freshwater Bay is a beautiful location to enjoy some wonderful views of Tennyson Downs towards the Needles. There are plenty of bus links to the Needles or back to Yarmouth if you would prefer not to continue on foot.
