The Isle of Wight is home to some of the most beautiful and historic churches in the UK.
Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking to admire stunning architecture and soak up some peace and tranquillity, it has been really hard to choose as we have so many favourites so here are 8 beautiful churches to visit on the Isle of Wight, along with their postcodes and nearest bus stops.

St Peters, Shorwell

The original foundations of St Peter’s are medieval, although it only has work of the 13th Century remaining. The tower was added in the 15th Century. It’s located in the picturesque village of Shorwell and is known for its stunning Norman architecture, carved corbels, and beautiful stained-glass windows.
The interior of the church features a famous 15th century painting of St. Christopher.
Shorwell is a perfect mid-Island stop, with lovely walks leading off in all directions from the Church. The church holds events throughout the year, from cake sales to coffee mornings – keep an eye out on their website.
Newport Minster

Nearest Bus Stop: St James Square (Routes 1, 7, 38)
Newport Minster, also known as the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, dates back to the 12th century and is the largest church on the Isle of Wight. It has been restored and renovated over the centuries, and its interior features stunning stained-glass windows, a magnificent pipe organ, and a beautiful Norman font. It is a great addition to a day in Newport and is surrounded by cafes and shops. With the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Minster is nearing the end of their journey to restore the church’s historic structure and contents and reorder the internal space.
St. Mildred’s Church, Whippingham

St. Mildred’s Church is a beautiful Gothic Revival church designed by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. The church was built in 1854, and it’s said that Queen Victoria worshipped here on a regular basis. The church is open Monday to Thursday during April to October with free admission.

All Saints’ Church, Freshwater

All Saints’ Church is a historic church in the beautiful village of Freshwater on the western end of the island. It dates back to the 14th century, and its interior features stunning stained-glass windows, an intricately carved rood screen, and a beautiful Victorian baptismal font.
St. Catherine’s Church, Ventnor

Nearest Bus Stop: Ocean View Road (Routes 3, 6)
St. Catherine’s Church is a picturesque 14th-century church located on the cliff top above Ventnor. Be prepared to walk on steep paths, the routes around Ventnor are often quite steep and may not be suitable for pushchairs or people who struggle with inclines. The church has a rich history and is known for its stunning views over the English Channel.
St. Mary the Virgin, Brading

St. Mary the Virgin is a Norman church that dates back to the 12th century. It’s a stunning example of Norman architecture and features beautiful stained-glass windows, intricate carvings, and a 14th-century font. Brading is well worth a visit anytime of the year.

St. Boniface Church, Bonchurch

St. Boniface Church is a beautiful Victorian church located in the village of Bonchurch. It was built in 1848 and features stunning stained-glass windows and a magnificent wooden altar. Take some time to explore the area around Bonchurch on foot, it is worthwhile but some paths and roads are quite steep so please plan your trip carefully,
St. Saviour’s Church, Totland

St. Saviour’s Church is a Grade II listed church that dates back to the 19th century. It’s located in the village of Totland and is known for its stunning stained-glass windows, beautiful carvings, and intricate woodwork. Why not add a visit to Freshwater, Alum Bay and the Needles Battery in also to make a great day out!
