While walking along the beach near Bembridge a few years ago, a family spotted something unusual sticking out of the sand. As they got closer, they realised that it was an old bottle, and it was sealed with a cork.
Intrigued, they carefully removed the cork and found a rolled-up piece of paper inside. The paper had become brittle and yellow with age, but the writing was still legible.
It turned out to be a message in a bottle that had been written more than a century ago. The note was from a man named J.E. Wallis, who had thrown the bottle into the sea in 1906.
The note contained information about the date and location where the bottle had been thrown into the water, as well as a request for the finder to write back and let Wallis know where the bottle had washed up.
The family was amazed by their discovery and decided to fulfill Wallis’s request. They did some research and found that J.E. Wallis had been a member of the British Marine Biological Association and had likely thrown the bottle into the water as part of a scientific experiment.
After some more digging, the family was able to track down Wallis’s descendants and share the incredible story of their discovery. They even returned the message in a bottle to the Wallis family, who were thrilled to receive such a unique piece of their family’s history.
The chance discovery of J.E. Wallis’s message in a bottle is a testament to the power of the sea and the incredible stories that can be found on the beaches of the Isle of Wight.
It’s a reminder to always keep an eye out for hidden treasures and to appreciate the natural wonders that surround us.
