Isle of Wight tide times 2024

To ensure your safety on the water in the Isle of Wight, it’s essential to keep track of the changing tides and plan your activities accordingly, so you don’t get cut off by the rising tide – use our handy Isle of Wight tide times below.
If you are not familiar with the tides it is easy to get caught on a mud covered slipway, or cut off by the tide on a walk.
Be sure to check local tide times before you head out, give yourself plenty of time to get back to shore, and always let someone know where you are and when you plan to return.

Below you will find tide tables for Bembridge, Ventnor, Cowes and Freshwater, and advice on beach safety.

The tide times between Yarmouth and Bembridge for example, both located on the Isle of Wight, can differ due to the different positions of these towns along the island’s coastline. Yarmouth is located on the western side of the island, while Bembridge is on the eastern side, which means that the tides can vary by up to an hour or more between the two towns.

If you are leaving Bembridge Harbour for a Kayak it may not be possible for example to get back up a slipway during or 2 hours either side of low tide. Similarly if you are launching a vessel into the water on the River Yar, in Yarmouth around low tide it may prove to be very difficult to get back up the slip way.  Conversely if you go for a walk leaving Shanklin to visit Luccombe Caves, you WILL get cut off by high tide on your return if you leave on a rising tide.

Beaches such as Shanklin, Compton Bay and Colwell Bay completely disappear at high tide, meaning if you wander off on a rising tide you will  come back to find your beach towel floating in the water!

Water Safety on the Isle of Wight

Also remember that the strength of the tide can vary, if you are planning on kayaking or paddling boarding from one end of a bay to another do check the tides and understand which way you will have the tide with you and which was it will be going against you, it is very easy to become tired when you have to row back against the tide.  The direction of the wind can also impact your safety, check to see if the wind will be blowing you out to see or back into the beach (offshore or onshore). The flags on many beaches will give you a reasonable indication of wind direction.

Therefore, it’s essential to check the local tide times for the specific location you are planning to visit to ensure that you have the most accurate and up-to-date information.  Remember call 999 in an emergency and ask for the Coastguard.
