Starting from Newport, we parked at Church Litten car park near Morrisons (We stopped at McDonalds on St James Street for refreshments!). From there, you can head towards the river (Lukely Brook), down the High Street, then turn onto Mill Street. The brook will be your guide for much of the journey.  You can also access the start of this route via bus arriving at Newport Bus Station, which is located in the heart of Newport, the county town of the Isle of Wight.

The station also provides amenities such as public toilets, a café, and a waiting area for passengers.

The Mill Trail celebrates the industrial heritage of the rivers of Newport and Carisbrooke and can be enjoyed as either an eight mile town and country walk or a shorter four mile circular town route. Once there were 14 mills located along the River Medina and Lukely Brook, plus several breweries, all requiring large quantities of water for their work. Many of these buildings are still standing and can be seen along the route.  The route can be taken all the way around newport, or alternativley start in Newport and head South for a shorter version.

As you follow the river, you will pass several historic mills that played a key role in the island’s economy and culture. The walk can continue following the brook up to Carisbrooke Castle or you can return back to Newport at anytime, the walk forms a gentle loop on pavements and pathways and is well signposted.

Island rivers provide comprehensive maps and details of the history of the walks, please visit their site for many more walking resources and a useful map of this walk.
