Morning Rainy Day Activities:

The island boasts fascinating museums, indoor attractions and historical sites that offer a glimpse into its rich heritage. For your first stop head to Arreton Barns with plenty of free parking, much of the site is sheltered or indoors, pack your raincoats as you do have to walk between buildings.

We’ve included the top 10 paid for attractions at the bottom of the article!

Firstly, head up to Isle of Wight glass studios tucked away at the back of the site which runs live glass making displays and with seating you are able to watch these artisans at work.  Isle of Wight Glass is the most established glass studio on the Island, founded in 1973 in St. Lawrence, on the southern side of the Isle of Wight by designer and glassmaker, Michael Harris. During 2013 it relocated to its current studio at Arreton Barns where it continued production of one of the world’s great studio glass products.  Still a family run business, it continues to run under the care of Timothy Harris – Michael’s eldest son, and nephew of the new owner, Richard Harris.

The children loved sitting down and watching the glass making display and they had lots of questions which Richard happily answered,  he showed them how he dipped the molten glass into silver powder and gold leaf and then gave us all a close up of the effects this created.

Timothy is recognised as one of Britain’s most innovative and prolific designers and makers of Studio Glass and ranks amongst the best in the world, and you are able to see him working in the live glass making displays.

The centre is very family friendly and for the parents and children alike the glass collection and making process is fascinating to learn about.

Open everyday of the week, from the Isle of Wight glass studio, head upstairs to The Isle of Wight Glass Museum has the largest collection anywhere of handmade art glass produced on the Isle of Wight and is free to enter. There is colouring and a seating area for children to sit whilst you look over 1200 pieces on show, in two galleries.

You can head to the Shipwreck Centre & Maritime Museum – a family of 4 is £18 entry, where you can learn about the island’s maritime history and intriguing shipwreck artifacts. However there is plenty to still do at Arreton without spending a penny!

If the rain does stop, the children can explore the surrounding area. Away from the roads, there are paths and interesting nooks and crannies to explore, including the lake and a fascinating walk around the church, plus a traditional sweet shop and crafts and arts sellers.

Tucked away near the entrance to the barns, make sure you head to the Penny Arcade where you can try your luck on the old penny slot games. This indoor activity is great entertainment for children and adults of all ages.

For refreshments head to the Dairyman’s Daughter offering coffee and refreshments and a delicious menu of traditional home cooked food.  Voted in the top 10 places on the Island to have a roast dinner – pre-booking is essential.

Sandown Pier Isle of Wight

Early Lunchtime Stop:

Head towards Sandown, you will find Morrisons at Lake and Aldi where you can purchase meal deals for around £3.50, grab yourself a pack lunch and then head to Sandown or Shanklin Pier for some amusement fun.

If you are looking for a low cost activity head to The Heights swimming pool in Sandown, a group swim costs only £12.75 (August 23 prices) for a family of 4 and with a small infant pool and deeper family pool, you can enjoy family time without breaking the bank.  No booking required, but look for the casual swimming times listed on the website and plan around this.   There is a free viewing area for parents who do not wish to swim.

Next stop Sandown Pier!

If you’re on a budget spending money on arcades isn’t cheap, but with no entry fee, visiting Sandown Pier is free and is an attraction in itself, you can walk the entire length of the pier and enjoy beautiful views across Sandown bay and over the Shanklin.  On a windy day its quite exhilarating to stand inside the pier and look out to the waves crashing on the beach.  Change £1 up into 2p’s and you will have hours of fun on the machines.  Parking along the Seafront Esplanade or St Johns Road, Fort Street are a few options for longer stay parking.

Another low cost activity option is The National Poo museum where a family ticket costs under £20. The poo museum is tucked away in Sandown Battery, housed in an old victorian public toilet providing lots of interactive exhibits to keep the whole family entertained and amazed!  If the weather clears up, children can play in the park in front of the museum and run around the old battery.  Its a great walk along the cliff top path on a fair day, but if your driving and it’s raining, park in The Heights car park and walk across the road.

Spot a Red Squirrell

Finally head over to the Garlic Farm, the shop is free to visit and sells a fascinating range of garlic infused products from garlic mayonnaise to garlicky chutneys and from black garlic beer to garlic ice cream. If the rain stops there is also a free park for children to play in, if you’re lucky you may even spot a Red Squirrel or Peacock roaming the gardens.  The red squirrels are often fed by the restaurant and seen running between the feeding area and along the old house walls – keep your eyes peeled!

If your heading from Arreton to Sandown, and have time, you can also make a stop at Holliers Park and the House of Chilli – with free entry, there are some great local crafts and artsian products to check out plus a fantastic choice of Chilli products to tempt you..

3 day free activity planner for Isle of Wight holidays

Looking for something a little more adventurous to do on the Isle of Wight on a rainy day?

The weather on the island can be a curious phenomenon, with forecasts predicting rain and strong winds. However, don’t be disheartened as certain parts of the island can surprisingly escape the bad weather. Take Sandown beach as an example; despite a less-than-ideal forecast of 18°C in August with 30mph winds and rain, it’s still worth heading down with wetsuits and surfboards to test the conditions.

The secret lies in the wind direction. Some areas, like the Needles and Freshwater, may be more exposed to the SW winds, but the Eastern side of the island offers remarkable shelter. On days with strong winds, Sandown beach becomes a hub for adventure seekers, with rolling waves creating gentle surf. The sea is surprisingly not cold during this time, and the wind, though strong, isn’t chilling either. Naturally on days with an Eastern wind direction, head to the sheltered beaches on the western coast like Colwell and Totland.

Staying entertained during summer holidays – making memories with kids on rainy days

When rainy days are more frequent, there are plenty of ways to stay entertained. If the rain is light, you can still enjoy the beaches, the sea is usually a comfortable temprature for children to play in! Grab a poncho and take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline. Rain can reveal hidden treasures on the beaches, such as unique shells, fossils, and colourful sea glass. Take a beachcombing adventure and see what you can discover.

Looking for more outdoor adventure ideas?

Seaview and Bembridge provide excellent shelter during Westerly winds. If you’re up for some adrenaline-pumping fun and don’t mind getting wet, pack your snorkel and explore the rock pools at Seaview or head to Sandown beach for an exciting surfing experience.

For the most extreme wave seekers, Westerly winds can create excellent surf conditions at Compton Bay, but it might be more suitable for those who enjoy colder rainy days.

So, when the weather forecast looks dreary, don’t hesitate to explore the adventurous side of the Isle of Wight. Rain or shine, there’s always something thrilling waiting for you!

Isle of Wight is a haven for families, and even on rainy days, there’s no shortage of fun-filled activities to enjoy together:
