Ryde is a bustling town on the eastern side of the island and offers easy access to many of the island’s top attractions. Here’s how to make the most out of a day trip to the Isle of Wight as a foot passenger arriving in Ryde.
9:00 am – Arrive in Ryde
If you’re taking the ferry from Portsmouth, it’s a short 20-minute journey to Ryde.
Once you have arrived at Ryde Pier Head and you fancy stretching your legs, you can choose to walk down the Victorian pier to Ryde Esplanade. Alternativley you can get the train down the pier – check the timetable before you leave.
If you are arriving by Hovercraft you will arrive 2 minutes from the centre of Ryde, with easy accessiable reach of all the towns amenities.
Assistance is available to customers boarding and alighting trains at the Pier Head, at all times trains are running. There are toilets and free WiFi plus a small cafe serving hot drinks.
10:00 am – Visit Appley Beach
Once you have arrived at the Pier or Esplanade, turn left (your back facing the seafront) and take a walk along the esplanade towards Appley Beach, a beautiful and popular beach with a wide stretch of golden sand. You will walk past the small marina on the way.
Take in the sea views as you walk along the seafront, paddle in the water, or simply relax on the beach. It is a short 20 minute walk past the amusement arcades and historic seafront of Ryde.
You will know you have arrived at Appley Beach as you will see the famous Appley Tower. Stop for refreshments or turn around to walk back to Ryde
11:00 am –
Explore Ryde’s high street
Ryde has a bustling high street with many independent shops and boutiques, as well as well-known high street brands. Take some time to explore the shops and stop for a coffee or lunch at one of the many cafes and restaurants in the area.
You will see the High Street going up the hill, when you reach the junction at the top the high street continues. You will find a great range of shops and restaurants to suit all budgets.
French Franks is a good value refreshment stop half the way up the high street, serving a delicious assortment of snacks.
12:30 pm –
Visit Quarr Abbey for lunch
The main bust station for Ryde is located on the Esplanade, near the entrance to the pier. Taking a bus from Ryde to Quarr Abbey, a beautiful and peaceful Benedictine monastery is an easy excursion without venturing too far from Ryde.
The Abbey features stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, and a shop selling handmade gifts and produce and is free to visit. The bus stops directly outside the Abbey and you walk down the lane directly to the areas to explore.
Take a picnic to eat on the many picnic benches, or enjoy some fresh food in the restaurant. We can recommed their homemade sausage rolls and Gluten free cakes. There are public toilets and good facilities.
2:00 pm –
Walk off lunch! Take a coastal walk
After visiting Quarr Abbey, you are able to follow the marked footpaths to nearby town of Fishbourne then Wootton. The walk offers beautiful views of the Solent and passes through picturesque villages and countryside. Just outside the Monastery, you will see the marked paths.
If you are not ready for more walking, take your return bus back to Ryde from the Abbey.
4:00m Visit The Isle of Wight Bus Museum
The Museum has a display of around 20 historic vehicles, transport displays, photographs, a tea bar and a shop and is Free to visitors. It is also only a short distance from the return ferry.
6:00 pm – Return to Ryde
Make your way back to Ryde and catch the ferry back to the mainland. If you have some time to spare, take a stroll along the seafront or grab a drink in one of the local pubs.
