Stage 1: Niton Smugglers Tunnels
Niton Smugglers Tunnels, nestled just above the rugged coastline, bear witness to a bygone era of clandestine activities. These tunnels, built from local stone, were once a haven for smugglers evading authorities bring contraband from the coast inland. Today, they exude an eerie charm, inviting adventurers to step into the shadows of the past. The Tunnels are part of a wider footpath network that will have you exploring until your hearts content.
Niton and Whitwell Parish Council have published a wonderful walking trail of the many historic smugglers dens in and around Niton. Its well worth a read and will help you explore the area with much more background on the smuggling history of the area.
What to Explore:
Parking is easy along the main road, head towards Niton Undercliff (Undercliff Drive) Don’t miss the old thatched cottages, and if you’ve got more time locate the Cripple Path. It is easy to spend a day exploring Niton, we have covered a small area in this guide.
Stage 2: Blackgang Old Road
The Old Blackgang Road is just a short distance from the Niton Tunnels, with the end of the road a bit farther down. You can either take a leisurely stroll or opt to drive to reach the road’s conclusion. This route, however, bears the scars of historic landslides, adding an intriguing layer of mystery as nature gradually reclaims what was once a well-traveled path.
While there are no visible remnants of the old road, intrepid explorers may discover pathways (though risky and not recommended) leading to the former Seaview Nudist Campsite, which was swept away in a landslide in 1980. The former Blackgang Road abruptly ceases, offering stunning views of the majestic cliff faces. This area is an absolute must-see for those eager to witness a completely different facet of the island.
Originally connecting Blackgang Chine with Niton, the old road began at the base of the present-day Blackgang Chine adventure park. Unfortunately, the public is barred from accessing the old route due to its obliteration during a massive landslide.
Stage 3: Shorwell, Wolverton Manor and Troopers Copse
Embarking on the journey from Shorwell leads you through the charming village, characterised by its quaint thatched cottages and ancient church. This sets the stage for a delightful and atmospheric exploration. A walk from Shorwell to Troopers Copse unveils a hidden gem, offering a serene woodland path, a beautiful wooden bridge and the historic charm of Wolverton Manor, through one of the most picturesque villages nestled away on the Island.
For a delightful break during your day, The Crown Inn awaits. It’s the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat. Picture yourself seated by the crystal-clear freshwater trout stream, savoring the flavors of fresh local produce. The welcoming garden serves as an inviting starting point for your exploration of Shorwell.
On approaching Shorwell from the North down Shorwell Shute, this journey unveils a picturesque scene, with the road taking the form of a deep ‘shute’ spanned by a rustic bridge known as Shorwell Shute Footbridge.
Unfortunately, the bridge has recently been deemed unsafe, necessitating its closure, but you get a great view driving underneath on the approach to the village. The cottages in this area are predominantly constructed of stone and thatched. The stunning Jacobean manor-house of North Court lies to the west, hidden from the road at the bottom of the ‘shute’ where it enters the village.
Wolverton Manor, the second house constructed on this site, embodies the typical Jacobean architectural style, forming an ‘E’ shape when viewed from above. The original house was ingeniously built on an island, and remnants of the moat persist to this day. The farm outbuildings hold special significance, serving the working farm. Notably, the expansive thatched shearing barn stands as one of the finest examples in the entire South of England. The Granary and the old chapel contribute to a remarkable ensemble of historically important structures.
Sitting behind this estate lies the concealed Troopers Copse wooden walkway, winding through the woods at the back of the house. This path offers a particularly intriguing journey, guiding you through the marshy copse. Accessible via a public footpath, it’s crucial to respect the homeowners whose property the path traverses.
