Rainy days often get a bad reputation, but there is a certain charm and tranquillity that comes with the pitter-patter of raindrops. The Isle of Wight offers a unique experience on such days, where you can embrace the island’s beauty in a different light. For example, walking under a canopy of trees in many of the island’s forests or braving it and getting out on the beach regardless of whether it’s sunny or rainy. Holiday accommodation space may be limited if you’re staying in many of the hotels across the Island, and trying to keep children entertained can be stressful. So, instead of letting the rain dampen your spirits, let it enhance your experience and discover the hidden treasures of the Isle of Wight
When the rain starts to pour, it’s time to explore the indoor activities that the Isle of Wight has to offer. One of the must-visit attractions is the Isle of Wight glass studios in Arreton Barns. Completely free to enter and you can sit in the warm watching live glass making demonstrations, visit the incredible glass museum and if the weather dries up take a look round Arreton Barns. Isle of Wight Studio Glass was founded in 1973 in St. Lawrence, on the southern side of the Isle of Wight by glassmaker, Michael Harris.
During 2013 it relocated to a new studio at Arreton Barns where it continued production of one of the world’s great studio glass products. Children of all ages will enjoy watching the glass demonstrations and parents can put their feet up and have a well earned rest.
Take advantage of the free parking in Arreton Barns, once you arrive walk right through the main area up to the back of the barns where you will find the studio. You also pass the Shipwreck museum which is a paid attraction but worth the visit nonetheless. We often pop in for a hot chocolate on a rainy day and are always made to feel very welcome. The building is incredible, and you must explore the undercover bridge walkway over the old canal. If the weather dries up, you find yourself in the middle of Newport with plenty of high street shops to explore, or take a stroll down the River Medina.
For those with a passion for nature, the Golden Hill Fort Country Park near Freshwater is a must. With plenty of free parking, this former Palmerston Folly that was built to protect the Solent from invasion is now a 20 hectare wild park, built on high ground it was designed to defend and support the coastal batteries.

One such place is Alum Bay, a famous beach near the Needles landmark located on the western tip of the island. These towering chalk stacks rise dramatically from the sea in the distance, creating a breathtaking sight that is even more dramatic in stormy weather. Put on your raincoat and take a stroll from the Needles Pleasure Park (parking charges apply) then down the steep steps or path onto Alum Bay beach, revelling in the power of nature as waves crash against the stony beach. Just be sure to keep a safe distance from the cliffs where the famous coloured sands are and take extra care on wet and slippery surfaces.
Another outdoor activity that can be enjoyed in the rain is a visit to Borthwood Copse near Sandown. This woodland paradise is a delightful spot to wander amongst ancient oak and beech trees, and chestnut coppice, sheltering from the rain under the protection of the tree canopy. We have often been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a red squirrel and watch buzzards fly overhead. You may be surprised at what you might find during a walk around Borthwood. If we told you we spotted an owl, an eagle, and other birds of prey, you may not believe us, but you can find out for yourself! Morrison and Lidl supermarkets are only down the road towards Sandown, meaning you can pick up a cheap lunch deal and enjoy a budget-friendly rainy day out!
While you are near Sandown, head onto Sandown Pier for some rainy day fun. Explore the vibrant array of activities available, from traditional seaside amusements to thrilling arcade games. A visit to the pier doesn’t need to break the bank; the 2p arcade machines will keep children entertained for hours, offering budget-friendly enjoyment.
